At 5 days old, she's officially the youngest person I've ever had sit for a portrait.

Two weeks down, two weeks to go. I've never grown facial hair because I figured that I wouldn't like it. Turns out I was right, and every morning it gets harder and harder to resist shaving this thing off my face. Being able to raise money for prostate cancer research helps – a lot – but in order to raise money, I need donations, and that’s where you guys come in.

It’s way easy – surf on over to http://mobro.co/HewisPhoto, click on “Donate To Me,” and follow along with the instructions.

Prostates everywhere will thank you!

It's nearing the end of the eleventh day of Movember, and my wife has let me know that she doesn't like kissing my fuzzy face. So now more than ever, I need your donations to stay enthusiastic and determined to succeed! Head on over to http://mobro.co/HewisPhoto to show me "mo" love, and to let me know that the sacrifice is worth it!

On a related note, I'd like to thank Jason Mullen for keeping me motivated with his recent donation! Thanks Jason!!

Week one of Movember is complete, and a special thanks goes out to Jutta Thiel, who has launched my fund raising efforts with her generous donation! Thanks Jutta!

Each donation helps fund male cancer awareness and research programs, so if you have a few extra bucks, head on over to
http://mobro.co/HewisPhoto and support a great cause!

Some quick Movember facts on men's health:
• On average, men live 4-5 years less than women
• 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
• 25,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year in Canada

These are a few of the reasons why my fellow "mo bros" and I need your support - help us out by making a donation at http://mobro.co/HewisPhoto

Today is November 1st, or rather, MOvember 1st - “Mo” being short for moustache. During the month of Movember, men throughout Canada and around the world dedicate themselves to raising awareness and funds for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, by growing moustaches. Through the Movember Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada, Movember helps fund awareness, research, educational and support programs which would otherwise not be possible.

I’ve decided to join the movement, and will be donating my upper lip to the cause for the next 30 days. Starting today with a clean-shaven face, I’ll be growing what I can, and will be posting regular self portraits so you can track my progress. There’s only a month to grow, and I’d love it if you came along for the ride!

If you wish, you can support me and my “mo” by clicking on over to
http://mobro.co/HewisPhoto and making a donation. Or you can go old school by writing a cheque payable to “Movember Canada”, referencing my name and Registration Number
1910404  and sending it to: Movember  Canada, 119 Spadina Avenue, PO Box 65, Toronto, ON M5T 2T2

And of course, all donations are tax deductible.

The original 8x10 print of this photograph belongs to my wife's family. Made around 1918, it shows four generations - the youngest being the infant twins seated on the bench, and the oldest being the woman in the middle who was born in 1837. It is a treasured piece of family history, and lets her put faces to the names of some interesting characters in some fascinating stories.

It also gives me a deeper appreciation for the portraits I currently make for others. Part of the thrill for me as a photographer is knowing that in 100 years the portraits I make may give a sense of comfort and completeness to the descendents of those I meet and photograph, much like this one does for my wife.

So take care of the family photographs you have, and treasure the ones you have yet to make. Because 100 years from now, your family will be thankful you made the effort.
